PLANS for a new cafe and sandwich shop at a busy Horwich junction have been rejected by councillors after opposition from residents.

Several objections were submitted to planning officers claiming that the shop in Scholes Bank, at the Crown roundabout, would cause major traffic problems.

Highways engineers also objected, saying that the number of vehicles attracted by such a business would increase parking problems that already exist in the area.

Residents also pointed out the close proximity to The Manse Nursing Home and expressed concerns about increases in noise, litter and general nuisance.

One woman who attended a meeting of Horwich's planning committee said: "I have seen an ambulance that had to double park because it could not get close to The Manse. This would only make things worse."

Another man spoke on behalf of the landlord of The Crown pub, situated at the corner of the junction.

He said: "The landlord is concerned that if this shop goes ahead, there will be lots of people arriving in cars with nowhere to park who will use his private pub car park."

Councillors echoed the residents' concerns and recommended planning permission be refused.

Leader of Horwich Council John Cronnolley said: "This is a complete non-starter. It is the most totally inappropriate position for the use."
