Grimsby 1 Wigan Athletic 0 by Mike Whalley
A MUCH-CHANGED Wigan Athletic side fell victim to a Carling Cup shock as Andy Parkinson's first-half winner took Grimsby through.
Parkinson drove the only goal of the game past Gary Walsh in the 17th minute after Ashley Sestanovich had set up the chance.
It secured victory for the League Two side over the Championship leaders.
Paul Jewell had made seven changes to the side which beat Brighton on Saturday -- with Emerson Thome making his first start -- but the Latics boss was disappointed with his team's display.
"I expected to do far better than we did. Grimsby deserved to win but I am disappointed with the performance and the fact we are out of the cup," he said. "We did not have a full side out, but it was a team capable of winning the game.
"It could be a blessing in disguise, though. We have got a lot of games coming up and we have not got a big squad. The league is the single most important thing on our minds."
Lee McCulloch headed a golden chance wide two minutes before the interval, while Graham screwed wide with the goal at his mercy late in the game.
