THERE are no immediate plans to improve drainage at Leverhulme park after the Bolton Show washout, Bolton Council chiefs said today.

But it could be a consideration over the next two years as part of a plan to upgrade sports facilities.

The show, which is one of the largest free events in the country, was cancelled after council bosses deemed the venue to be too waterlogged due to recent bad weather.

It was the first time the massive attraction has been called-off in its 30-year history.

Several of the activities planned for the two-day event at Leverhulme Park were moved to Victoria Square, in Bolton town centre, in an attempt to offer shoppers and visitors some light entertainment. A spokesman for Bolton Council's commercial services department, which organised the event, said: "It is very unlikely that any drainage system would have coped with the rainfall that we experienced, as the Met Office has suggested we have had the 'wettest August on record'."

But she added that the Leverhulme park site, which is also home to football, cricket and rounders teams, had been earmarked for future development.

Under the council's Playing Pitch Strategy, which seeks to improve sporting facilities, the future of the park will be considered once the initiative's current work has been completed.

The spokesman added: "It is very unlikely that we will do any work to the drainage system until that review takes place so that appropriate development can be planned."
