THOUSANDS of people are dying unnecessarily in hospital because of a shortage of stroke units, say the Royal College of Physicians.
The Government had set a target for all hospitals in England and Wales to have a stroke unit by the end of the year.
The Royal Bolton Hospital does have dedicated stroke unit but 18 per cent of hospitals do not. The survey was funded by the Government's Healthcare Commission who said there was "no excuse" for the shortfall.
