A NEXT door neighbour has appeared in court accused of the murder of a woman found stabbed to death at her home.

Thomas Edward Bevan, aged 55, of Jonquil Drive, Little Hulton, appeared at Salford Magistrates Court charged with the murder of Jacqueline Probert.

Grandmother Mrs Probert, aged 53, died in the Royal Bolton Hospital on Saturday night after suffering a deep stab wound to her neck.

Mrs Probert, who had a husband, Bernard, and two grown-up children, worked at the Asda store in Farnworth. Staff broke down in tears when they were told of her death.

Bevan, who spoke only to confirm his name, age and address was remanded in custody. He will appear at Manchester Crown Court on September 8 for a preliminary hearing. Bevan is also charged with wounding after two other women were left with injuries.

A 49-year-old woman, from Little Hulton, suffered a head wound and received treatment at the Royal Bolton Hospital. A third woman, aged 38, also from Little Hulton, suffered cuts to her hand but did not need hospital treatment.

Asda store manager Trish Atkinson said: "Jacqueline was extremely popular with both customers and colleagues and will be greatly missed."
