HORDES of people will be able to visit a host of heritage sites free of charge during special open days.

A total of 119 properties in Greater Manchester will be opening from September 10 to 13 for the annual event co-ordinated by the Civic Trust and English Heritage.

In Bolton, All Souls' church in Astley Street, off the A666 Blackburn Road, will be open from 11am to 4pm on September 11 and 12.

The Grade II listed Bolton Parish Church, in Silverwell Street, will be open from 10am to 2pm on Saturday, September 11. There will be tours of the church tower at 10am and 11.15am.

Bolton Steam Museum, in Atlas Mills, Mornington Road, will be open on September 11 and 12 from 10am to 4pm. The display will feature 23 stationary steam engines and five engines will be running using electric motors.

Hall i'th' Wood Museum, in Green Way, off Cropmton Way is open on September 11 and 12 from 11am to 5pm. It will be offering behind-the-scenes tours, which must be booked in advance on 01204 332370.

Dr Simon Thurley, English Heritage chief executive said: "Heritage open days are a huge success story. Who hasn't past buildings in their street and wondered what lies behind their doors? Now is your chance to find out about your history and culture."
