A FAMOUS Bolton-built steam engine will be brought back to life this weekend.

The huge four-cylinder Trencherfield Mill engine at Wigan Pier, built in 1907, has undergone a £60,000 revamp.

It is now taller than a double decker bus and a single decker placed on top of each other.

In its heyday, its steam whistle used to signal the start and close of a shift and could be heard more than two miles away.

Wigan Pier has planned a big celebration this weekend with free events including street entertainment with stilt-walkers, plate spinning, juggling, escapology, fire-eating and a Victorian side-show with hypnotism. There will be brass bands, folk groups and the George Formby Appreciation Society, as well as theatre performances, clog and Morris dancing and art and craft displays.

In keeping with the theme of the event, there will be steam and traction engines on display and visitors will have the opportunity to see the engine in full steam for £1.

The Official Re-opening of the fully restored Trencherfield Mill Engine will take place at Wigan Pier on Saturday, and Sunday, from 11am until 5pm.
