A TEACHER who tried to help a woman who was stabbed to death in the street is fighting for her life today.

Katherine Moore, 57, was driving on Silk Street in Salford, Greater Manchester, when she spotted the attack on the eastern European woman aged in her 20s.

She got out of her car to help the victim but was stabbed herself by the man who eye witnesses said brandished a six-inch kitchen knife and carried a religious book.

Police arrested a 21-year-old man at the scene and he has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act 1983.

Mrs Moore's husband, Ted, was at his wife's bedside in Hope Hospital where her condition was described as critical.

Mr Moore, of Salford, said: "It doesn't surprise me that Kathy would stop to help someone if they were in trouble.

"That's the kind of person she is. She's always thinking of others."
