FIREFIGHTERS issued a warning after a chip pan blaze broke out at a house in Leigh.
Fire crews were called to Siddow Common, near Pennington, at around 1.45am after a fierce fire started in the kitchen of the house.
Fire officers said a chip pan was left unattended after the owner of the house fell asleep.
The man was woken by neighbours who smelled smoke and knocked on his door.
He managed to get out of the house and suffered the effects of minor smoke inhalation.
Fire crews rescued a puppy from the house.
The kitchen was destroyed and the rest of the house was damaged by smoke.
Station Officer Chris Ward said: "It only takes a second to fall asleep and but for the man's neighbours waking him up, the consequences could have been very grave.
"We would warn against people using chip pans at night when they might be tired or possibly have had a drink."
