A SCHOOLBOY is calling for speed humps to be put at a busy road junction where a teenage girl was killed.

Ryan Errington wants to slow down drivers at the crossroads of Longcauseway and Albert Road, Farnworth.

Ryan, aged 12, of Pansy Road, Farnworth, has made the plea in a bid to prevent tragedies such as the death last month of fellow Harper Green School pupil Carla Bate.

Bolton Council has promised to install a pedestrian crossing at the busy junction, but Ryan says this is not enough.

"I often walk down past the junction and anyone can see that it's a dangerous junction," he said.

"The pedestrian crossing is a good start, but speed humps would really force drivers to slow down."

Carla, aged 13, died at the scene of the crash when she and her friend Leanne Keegan were hit by a car.

Residents have long called on traffic chiefs to put traffic calming measures at the junction. Some say the roads are a popular route for car "boy racers" who drive past at high speed.

A council spokesman said: "As this is a main road, it would be difficult to introduce speed humps.

"But there are other measures to reduce speed that could be introduced on a road like this and this is something under consideration."

Steven Lewis, aged 35, of Westland Avenue, Farnworth, has been charged with causing the death of Carla Bate by dangerous driving.
