WENDY Pye, chairman of the Bolton branch of the Workers' Educational Association, tells me about an interesting event this Saturday, September 11.
It is a free WEA day-school between 11am and 4pm on "The Story of King Cotton".
Stuart Robertson, who has taught local history courses for the WEA for the last two years, will trace the history of cotton production from cottage industry days to its decline in the mid 20th century, taking in a Victorian golden age when "Britain's bread hung by Lancashire's thread".
The afternoon session will consist of a walking tour of Bolton town centre, illustrating the lasting legacy of cotton to Bolton.
