THE former school of Nobel prize-winner Sir Harry Kroto could become home to 25 two-storey houses in a scheme to be considered by planning bosses.
Developer Miller Metcalfe wants to build the five-bedroomed homes on the site of the demolished Wolfenden Street School on Wolfenden Street, Bolton.
It has agreed to donate nearly £100,000 towards education facilities in the area in recognition of the demand that will be placed on local schools by the development.
Company officials have also decided not to demolish a wall separating the site from sheltered accommodation at Byland Close and Lomax Street following a petition by residents.
A new access road will be created from Wolfenden Street and a wall and railings will be put up at the front of Wolfenden Community Centre.
Two letters have been sent to planners by residents objecting to the scheme on the grounds that it would add to congestion, that there is insufficient parking space and that it would overlook neighbouring properties.
Officers have recommended that Bolton Council's planning committee refer the decision on whether to give the scheme the go-ahead to the director of environment.
Martin Mansell, an officer in the planning control section, said: "The benefits of regenerating the site, the quality of the new housing and improved access for the community centre are considered to outweigh concerns regarding parking."
Leading scientist Sir Harry Kroto began his academic career at Wolfenden Street School in the 1940s. He was presented with a brick from the rubble of the school after it was demolished earlier this year.
Wolfenden Street School has merged with Chalfont Street School and now operates from a new site on Hibbert Street, off Blackburn Road, under the name of the Valley Community School.
