FIVE people were arrested during sporadic trouble following Wanderers' 2-2 draw with Manchester United.
Eleven people were also thrown out of the Reebok Stadium on Saturday, and a further two people were arrested on suspicion of theft.
Police said the game passed off peacefully, despite the efforts of a small minority to cause trouble.
Extra patrols including mounted officers and motorcyclists were deployed across the borough. Many pubs remained closed during the afternoon, while others only allowed in either home or away fans.
Match commander Dave Lea, head of Bolton Police, said: "It was a very busy day but the police operation was successful. The 11 people who were ejected from the Reebok had either infiltrated the wrong part of the ground or were acting in an intimidating or aggressive way.
"There is always going to be a small group of people who behave in an idiotic way, but as a result of the police operation they were prevented from spoiling it for everyone else."
