I WATCHED as a tearful woman, whose son was killed in the 9/11 tragedy, pleaded live on TV with Mr Blair not to go to war in Iraq.

I have seen the expression on the faces of asylum seekers when their pleas have been turned down.

I have total compassion for those who are fleeing persecution, and I agree that the reason for us going to war, the allegation by this Government that WMD could be launched at our assets in Greece within 45 minutes, was, at best, a manufactured excuse to appease the sway of general public who were against the idea.

But, in response to Malcolm Pittock's question, "What do you expect them to do?", when talking about supposedly law-abiding asylum seekers - I expect the same of every other citizen of this country - to obey the law.

So let us clarify the law.

The law states one must, "seek sanctuary at the first safe country they reach", and, in fact, I'm sure under such horrific persecution, I would be totally relieved to do so.

Are there not several safe countries across Europe before one arrives on the shores of Great Britain - or am I missing something?

And since when has Europe not been classed as safe?

In obeying the law, I would also expect them to legally proceed with their asylum application for that country they arrive in, furthermore obey the laws of that country from the moment they arrive.

That is not so much to ask is it really? Especially from someone fleeing such horrific and dire circumstances.

In comparison, I, too, recently took up a new job and, as per my legal duty, I informed the benefits agency as I, too, was receiving help. Difference being, I obeyed the law. Indeed would Mr Pittock have condoned my behaviour had I not done so?
