rom the Evening News, September 15, 1904: A MEETING of delegates from the various Catholic clubs in Bolton and district was held at Lawrie's Restaurant, Bradshawgate, on Wednesday evening, for the purpose of forming a Catholic Billiard League for Bolton and district.

Enthusiastic speeches in commendation of the proposal were delivered and by a unanimous vote it was decided to go forward with the movement, the trophy to be played for to be named the Bolton and District Catholic Billiard League cup or shield.

THE Guatemalan ants, introduced to exterminate the boll weevil of Texas, the enemy of the cotton planter, have mysteriously disappeared.

From the Evening News, September 15, 1954: TWENTY-five years ago the Bolton Junior Chamber of Commerce was formed in Bolton. Its founder president was Mr A. B. Allanson, a director and general manager of John Booth and Sons (Bolton) Ltd, who in 1949 was elected president of the senior body, the Bolton Chamber of Commerce. The current president of the junior section, Mr F. J. Morris of Hindley Knight and Co Ltd, incorporated insurance brokers, Nelson Square, Bolton, has written to the heads of local firms asking if young men in responsible positions wish to become members.

LETTER to the editor: Sir, I was at the football match at Burnden Park on Saturday and although I am 5ft 9in in height I was unlucky enough to get behind two or three people who were about or above my own height. If they had been wearing caps, berets, or better still, no headgear at all, my view would not have been interrupted by their wearing hats. If these people must go to a match with hats, the polite thing to do would be to remove them whilst the game is on. HAVE A CARE.

From the Evening News, September 15, 1979: RIGHT to Work campaigners from all over the North-west lobbied delegates today at a North West TUC conference at the Miners' Hall, Bolton. About 25 members of the Greater Manchester Right to Work Campaign handed out leaflets demanding action against the level of unemployment in the region.

THE former England player, Alan Ball, is back in Southampton to pick up the threads of his English League career. After all the razzmatazz of helping Vancouver Whitecaps win the American Soccer Bowl, Southampton may have seemed a little dull. But the non-stop player was as eager for his 608th league game today as for his first. Ball and Norwich's Martin Peters are the only members of England's World Cup-winning sides still playing.

From the Evening News, September 15, 1994: A BOLTON Institute lecturer is lobbying the Government for an end to compulsory segregation of disabled children in education. Senior lecturer in teacher education Joe Whittaker is calling on Secretary of State Gillian Shephard to support parents of special needs pupils in free choice of schools.

YOUNG people in Bolton are to get their own health and family planning centre in a bid to tackle shocking teenage pregnancy and suicide rates. Schoolchildren from 11 upwards will be able to drop into the new town centre clinic for emotional, sexual or general health advice.
