COUNCILLORS often come in for criticism - although few of us are prepared to stand up and be counted when it comes to public office.
But an example comes up every now and again of exactly what is sacrificed to keep Bolton running.
Barbara Ronson is a long-term Lib Dem member of Bolton Council, and currently its Leader.
For the past couple of years, she has been fighting Polymyalgia Rheumatica - a debilitating illness which causes pain and tiredness.
Barbara continued to attend events around Horwich, and if people unkindly commented on her weight increase she just carried on with the job. It must have been tempting to simply lie down and have a nap rather than raise money for charities or attend endless meetings.
She and her husband Bob - along with most councillors - take their role seriously and do the job, come hell or high water. Every now and then, irrespective of politics, it's good to stop and appreciate this dedication.
