WARREN Hegg could be leading Lancashire for the last time in the relegation decider against Gloucestershire at Old Trafford.

The Red Rose captain has been under growing pressure due to the poor results of the last few months and it cumulated in his confrontation with the crowd at the end of the Surrey game two weeks ago.

Regardless of whether Lancashire survive or not Hegg will probably feel the time is right to move on and let another person lead the side, although he could still play on for at least another season.

But this is very hard on the wicket keeper. He has been at the heart of the Lancashire side for over a decade and has contributed to many match-winning performances.

Recently the 36-year-old spoke of the hurt he feels when the side loses and the efforts he, and everyone else, has been putting in.

However, after such a disappointing summer the feeling is that change is necessary to allow the club to move forward even if part of the poor run came when the captain was out injured.

The perfect situation would be for Hegg to lead Lancashire to the big win they need to stay in Division One and then be able to bow out on a high, with his reputation intact.

That victory is the only thing on the skipper's mind and he is confident the side is capable of doing it.

"We know exactly what we have to do, and the lads are looking at it very positively."

The weather is likely to play a part over the next four days, showers are forecast over the weekend, and any time lost is going to favour Gloucestershire -- this really is the final chance for the Red Rose.
