A TUTOR who has organised a programme for young people who have a troubled home life or have dropped out of school has been shortlisted for a national award.
Kathryn Downs started the e2e (Entry to Employment) programme at Bolton Community College a year ago. The programme has been so successful, she has been shortlisted as a regional finalist of the STAR awards. The awards, run by the Department for Education and Skills, seeks to celebrate the unsung heroes of the learning and skills sector.
Mrs Downs said: "I was really shocked and surprised when I found out I had even been put forward for the award."
The e2e programme is for young people aged between 16 and 19 who may not have achieved their potential at school for whatever reason. There are a total of 38 places. It aims to give them extra confidence and self-esteem and gives them the chance to try a variety of different vocations, such as hair and beauty, painting and decorating, construction, or catering to see if they can find their niche. They are also coached in CV and interview skills and get to meet with careers advisors.
