ON an emotional afternoon at Victory Park Chorley Lynx overcame all the odds to record a sensational victory over championship hopefuls York City Knights.
At one point Lynx trailed by sixteen points but they fought back in the second half and secured victory, amazingly, with the last kick of the match when Brian Capewell slotted over a brilliant drop goal from inside his own half.
An emotional Mark Lee said after the match: "It was a massive ask of the lads both emotional and physical against the best side in the league.
"The players and their families should be proud of themselves and the result today was for seventeen honest lads.
"I asked them at half time for another forty minutes but to cut out the errors and the players gave everything they had."
In front of a crowd of 616, York went ahead after 16 minutes with a try from Austin Buchanan and soon extended the lead with a Danny Brough penalty.
York dominated early on and they scored another try from Chris Langley and were further rewarded in the 35th minute after Lynx conceded a penalty and James Elston dived over with Danny Brough adding the conversion to give the visitors a 16 point advantage.
Lynx got back in the game on the stroke of half time when they were awarded a penalty on the York try line and Martin Roden squeezed over to touchdown and Capewell added the conversion.
Within two minutes of the restart Lynx reduced the arrears further when a Capewell grubber kick was seized on by Danny Arnold to touch down.
Four minutes later York restored their ten point advantage after an Albert Talipeau try.
Lynx then began to dominate the game but despite two excellent 40/20 kicks from Capewell they were unable to force their way through a stubborn York defence.
Lynx continued to pile on the pressure and the York defence finally cracked in the 71st minute when Chris Ramsdale and Brian Capewell combined to send in Eddie Kilgannon.
Five minutes later Kilgannon went over again and Capewell added the conversion to level the scores and set up a grandstand finish.
York had two drop goal efforts charged down and then, with only seconds left on the clock, Capewell produced an amazing effort from inside his own half to seal a deserved victory for Lynx.
Final score: Chorley Lynx 21 York City Knights 20
