LANCASHIRE were denied a vital third bowling point when Gloucestershire declared their first innings with eight wickets down at Old Trafford.
And it overshadowed a career best bowling performance by Gary Keedy, who took seven for 95.
The declaration means the Red Rose now have to score 400 for the loss of just five wickets to have any chance of staying in Division One. If Gloucestershire get six Lancashire scalps they will have enough bonus points to survive.
There was always to possibility of a declaration by one side to deny the other points and the ECB had explained the situation to both sides prior to the game. Phil Sharpe was appointed as a match referee to ensure the game was not brought into disrepute.
Sharpe said: "I think they were well within their rights to declare and Lord's said OK."
Lancashire coach Mike Watkinson said: "I can't categorically say we wouldn't have done the same if the situations were reversed."
