FORMER Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers striker Dwight Yorke has appeared at Chorley Magistrates' Court charged with dangerous driving and speeding.

Yorke travelled at speeds of up to 109mph along the M61 southbound carriageway and 'intimidated' other drivers, the court heard.

The incident, which Yorke denies, is alleged to have taken place on May 5, as Yorke drove to Manchester Airport to catch a plane to Trinidad.

He was arrested by motorway police in Anderton, just south of Bolton West service station.

Wearing a grey suit and open-necked white shirt, Yorke listened as magistrates were told he was tracked by police in an unmarked car for more than 12 miles as he drove through Chorley in his gold Lincoln Aviator 4x4 vehicle.

Prosecutor David Hargraves said Yorke moved from lane to lane, indicating to other drivers to move over, and 'wobbling' between lanes.

At one point, Yorke is said to have driven so close to another vehicle that the two cars looked to be locked together.

He said another driver saw the defendant approaching him in his rear-view mirror and later said he felt 'very intimidated' by his driving.

Defending, Robert McMaster said there were no aggravating features such as crashes and the case was one suitable to be decided upon by magistrates.

The charge carries the threat of up to six months in prison and a driving ban.

Magistrates adjourned the case until November 9 for a pre-trial review.
