LEIGH Centurions' fight to join RL's elite in Super League has gone right to the top.
Leigh MP Andy Burnham this week tabled a House of Commons Early Day Motion congratulating the Centurions on their success in clinching the National League One league title - and calling on the game's authorities to guarantee promotion for the eventual winners of the play-off.
Leigh hope that Parliamentary backing will help their case should they win the play-off Grand Final next month.
The club's application to join Super League was lodged at the end of last month and the RFL have promised that a decision will be made on their suitability before the Grand Final on October 10.
Leigh are one of half a dozen National League One clubs to submit applications but comments made by Sky TV pundit Phil Clarke last weekend have stirred up a hornet's best.
Clarke's view was that there could be no relegation from Super League this season because of the 'unsuitability' of clubs at the top of NL1.
Leigh believe that was Clarke's personal opinion and not one of the RFL but to be on the safe side they've enlisted the heavyweight support of Mr Burnham and Parliament.
Mr Burnham's Early Day Motion reads: "That this House congratulates the players, coach, directors, staff, supporters and everyone connected with Leigh Centurions Rugby League Club on clinching the National League One Minor Premiership;
Wishes them the best of luck in the forthcoming play-off games;
Calls on the Rugby Football League to ensure that the eventual winners of the National League One Grand Final gain their hard-earned and rightful place in the Super League;
And further calls on the RFL to safeguard the health of the game in its heartlands by introducing a competitive two-up, two-down system of promotion and relegation, with automatic promotion for the league winners.
The Motion is supported by fellow MPs Neil Turner (Wigan), David Hinchcliffe (Wakefield), Dave Watts (St Helens North), Lindsay Hoyle (Chorley) and Andy Reed (Loughborough).
Meanwhile Leigh will be without Chris Percival for the rest of the campaign after he broke his leg and ankle at Batley last Sunday. He had a pinning operation on Monday and is still in Dewsbury Hospital. He will be in plaster for up to eight weeks.
