A FOOTBALL club which suffered from vandalism more than 12 months ago has spent thousands of pounds improving security measures at its ground.
Vandals broke into a storage shed at Breightmet United last May and set fire to the contents. A tractor, nets and corner flags were destroyed in the blaze.
Representatives at the club applied for a series of grants from the East Bolton Regeneration fund and Tetleys-Carlsberg.
The brewery gave the football club £9,000 to improve security fencing around their Moss Park ground.
They have also spent £29,000 of EBR money on developing the football club, including a new drainage system under the pitch, an improved five-a-side artificial pitch, and the creation of new youth teams. They also plan to set up a girls' football team.
Officials say they have been keen to improve their links with the local community, and plan to set up a parent and toddler group which will meet at the club.
Youngsters from the Waggon Road and Blitz youth clubs were allowed to use the artificial pitch for free when they took part in coaching sessions held by the football club.
Barry Norris, secretary of Breightmet United, said: "The grants from the East Bolton Regeneration fund have been a massive help. They have helped us improve all aspects of the football club.
"We are always keen to improve links with the local community and boost the name of our football club, which is why we want to set up a parents' and toddlers' group."
Gareth Williams, pathways officer with the East Bolton Regeneration fund team, said: "The grants from the EBR fund have been a catalyst for the football club.
"It has helped them get involved with the local community.
"The financial support they have got from the fund has helped them to focus on what they want to achieve."
Breightmet United, who play their games in the Manchester League, plan to apply for grants to build floodlights at their ground.
The club is offering its facilities to the local community, including the artificial pitch - which can be hired for £20 per hour - and the clubhouse.
