BOLTON School is preparing to re-submit plans for improved primary school accomodation which will cost £10 million.

The independent school withdrew plans last October to transform its primary school accommodation following objections from local residents and after Bolton Council planning officers raised technical issues.

Now the school is preparing to re-submit a modified scheme in October or November. The previous application included a new building for the infants, an extension of the boys' division for a new junior school, a joint refectory and a shared music school.

Beech House, currently home to the shared infants school and which is in the grounds of the Girls Division, was going to close to make way for a new building on land between Park Road and Dobson Road. Under the old plans, the current boys' junior school in Park Road would have closed to be replaced by an extension to the main school in Chorley New Road.

The space left by the old boys junior school would then have been turned into a car park and coach turning circle.

Many local residents opposed the plans because they feared it could involve closing part of Dobson Road, with traffic being rerouted along Glade Street.

Simon Marsden, clerk and trustee to the governors, said the new plans would be "modified" from the previous application, although he would not say what the changes were.

"There will be amendments and I think they will be better received by residents and the local community," he said.

"I can't tell you what the plans are at the moment. I wish I could. I have been working on this project for three years and I am very enthusiastic about it."

Mr Marsden said the altered plans were going to be presented to various groups for consultation before they are submitted to the council.

The plans could be modified further when the school receives feedback, he said.

Last year the school held open evenings in a bid to allay the fears of residents.

The governors have said they want to improve traffic flow around the school as Chorley New Road has become a notorious congestion spot in the mornings and late afternoons during term time.
