THE Guides have launched an urgent appeal for more leaders to volunteer to help run groups across the town.

Around 400 girls aged between five to 14 have been placed on a waiting list by Guides bosses because there are not enough adults to help run Rainbows, Brownies and Guides packs.

The shortage of leaders has been blamed on modern day pressures on adults - including long hours at work - which does not give them any free time to volunteer.

Guides bosses said there has been a decline in the number of leaders for groups in Bolton, Farnworth, Whitefield and Prestwich - and the problem is getting worse as the waiting list continues to grow.

They need to recruit at least 30 leaders to clear the waiting list.

Linda Fogg, of Bolton Guides, said: "We can't take on any more children until more leaders come forward."

Potential leaders can be aged 18 to 65 and have to give just two hours a week.

They take part in a 12 month "hands on" training period where they have are mentored by present leaders. Anyone who wishes to volunteer should contact Carol on 01204 383015, or click on to www.girlguiding.org.uk.
