From the Evening News, September 24, 1904: A RATHER unusual kind of accident occurred in the early hours of this morning at the house of Mrs Wareing, Victoria Square.
Julia O'Neil (27) was sleeping at the house when at about 3 o'clock she was found to have fallen through a window downstairs, having apparently been walking in her sleep. The Fire Brigade ambulance was summoned and the injured woman was conveyed to the Infirmary, where she was found to be suffering from cuts about the legs and arms.
JOSEPH Isherwood, labourer, of no settled abode, was this morning proceeded against at the Borough Court by Mr A. F. Greenhalgh (on behalf of Mr J. H. Hall) on a charge of being found on enclosed premises. PC Hilton saw him climb the wall surrounding Peake's Place Cotton Works, Halliwell, and followed him to the boiler house. Prisoner said he was the watchman, but as the officer found this to be incorrect, Isherwood was taken into custody and when charged said he had intended sleeping there. Prisoner was sent to gaol for 21 days with hard labour.
From the Evening News, September 24, 1954: THOUSANDS of Bolton schoolchildren will be given a front-line view when the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh visit Bolton on October 22. One thousand will be in Victoria Square to see the arrival of the royal visitors and others will line the route.
THE 16th annual birthday dinner of the Bolton Soroptimists' Club will be held on Tuesday, October 19. This year's president, Miss F. Hilton, one of the founder members of the club, has invited Lady Barnett to be the guest speaker. Lady Barnett is a well-known television personality, particularly as a panel member on "What's My Line?"
From the Evening News, September 24, 1979: THOUSANDS of bluebottles were destroyed in a fire at an Edgworth maggot farm yesterday. The owner of the maggot farm, Mr Jack Lloyd, who supplies angling shops all over Lancashire and as far afield as Birmingham, said the fire destroyed almost the whole of his breeding stock.
THERE was a heroes' welcome yesterday when three regulars from the House with No Name, Bradshaw - Steven Burns, John Roberts and William Roberts - completed a 420-mile pram-pushing marathon to London and back in a bid to raise £10,000 for handicapped children. Landlord Eric Hoare walked with them from Farnworth as they were cheered on by hundreds of well-wishers.
From the Evening News, September 24, 1994: BOSSES at Bolton Greyhound Stadium could not work out why their car boot sales were going to the dogs. Then they spotted a poster on the wall of the Manchester Road stadium - diverting traders and customers to a rival sale on the Normid Superstore car park a quarter of a mile away. Stadium bosses now plan to have someone on duty from the crack of dawn this Sunday to make sure the mystery poster sticker does not strike again.
HORWICH councillor Barbara Ronson was re-elected chairman of the town's carnival committee at its annual meeting. Terry Hopkins is vice-chairman, Geoff Edwards remains treasurer and Betty Nuttall was re-elected secretary and sponsorship organiser.
