A WAITING room at Chorley railway station was smashed up just weeks after the completion of a refurbishment which cost almost £500,000.

Windows and lights were shattered by vandals who went on a wrecking spree using a drain cover to destroy the new fittings.

Four youths have been arrested and released on police bail in connection with the incident at 11.45pm on September 15, which resulted in more than £3,000 of damage.

Detective Constable Mick Millward, of British Transport Police, said: "A woman getting off a train saw the damage and told a taxi driver who then contacted police. We are very keen to trace this woman as she may have vital information about the incident."

The station is overseen by First North Western, which recently managed the £450,000 refurbishment which was completed in August.
