LEADING Conservatives have hit out at the Government over the "poor" performance of the Royal Mail in Bolton.

Philip Allott, the Conservative Party's Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Bolton West, described figures showing the group's performance as a "yet another public service failure".

Between April and June this year, only 90 per cent of first class letters in the BL postcode area sent to addresses outside the borough were delivered the next day.

Nearly two per cent of first class letters posted to addresses inside the postcode area did not arrive on time - failing the Post Office target of less than 0.8 per cent.

Nationally, the Royal Mail failed all fifteen of its performance targets.

Mr Allott said: "I am disappointed by these poor figures, which confirm local residents and firms' suspicions that a lot of first class mail is not arriving the next day.

"The Post Office is 100 per cent owned by the Government and the Government cannot escape its ultimate responsibility for the state of the Royal Mail network."
