I READ with interest that the old Odeon building will soon be vacant.
The building is one of the most recognisable and architecturally interesting in Bolton, has a fascinating history and is ideally located near existing amenities for a new entertainment use.
Bolton town centre has very little to offer the wider Bolton public at present - many people are scared off by the bar culture that dominates the town, preferring to stay local for their evening entertainment.
Bolton town centre needs more than cheap drink offers to attract the general public back to the centre.
Why not put the Odeon to use as an arts centre, an arthouse cinema, a live venue or a cafe? Or perhaps a venue that contains all these things, such as the Cornerhouse in Manchester or the Showroom in Sheffield.
Bolton is a vibrant and cosmopolitan town with a rapidly growing student population, but without the cultural facilities the town deserves. The council or private enterprise should be encouraged to use this important building as a focal point for creativity within the town and as a statement of where the town of Bolton is heading.
