A 22-year-old man was rescued from his flat in Bromley Cross on Saturday night after he left a chip pan on the cooker.
The man fell asleep with the chip pan on, which burst into flames at Thomas Court at 8.30pm.
A neighbour in the flat upstairs heard the smoke alarm and telephoned the fire brigade.
The man suffered slight smoke inhalation and the kitchen suffered minimal damage.
