AMIR Khan has become the first amateur to be chosen as Britain's Best Young Boxer of the Year since the award began 53 years ago.
The teenage Olympic lightweight silver medallist was the overwhelming choice by members of the Boxing Writers Club.
Khan, the only British boxer to qualify for Athens 2004, defied his youth and lack of experience to reach the final where he was eventually out-pointed by Cuba's defending Olympic champion Mario Kindelan.
The Bolton teenager will collect his prize at the Boxing Writers Club annual dinner at London's Savoy Hotel on October 18.
He joins a long list of famous names to take the award since Randolph Turpin was the first choice in 1951.
Khan, who has attracted interest from many of professional boxing's leading promoters, is currently involved in negotiations with the Amateur Boxing Association in a bid to sort out the funding which would enable him to stay amateur until the 2008 Beijing Games.
Last year the prize went to Enzo Maccarinelli, the reigning WBU cruiserweight champion from Wales.
