WHOEVER planned the roadworks in place at the top of Rishton Lane should watch the chaos each morning and evening.

On both Monday and Tuesday mornings this week, I waited for the bus on Rishton Lane, watching the behaviour of some car drivers in disbelief.

The double yellow lines have been extended on the post office side, leaving room for one car to park before the bus stop marking. One car duly parked there on both days, with other cars parking as close as they can to the other end of the bus stop.

Since the bus stop on the other side of the road is even closer to the crossroads, there was barely room for the passing traffic to get through and a larger vehicle had to inch slowly through the narrow gap to avoid scraping either the bus or the car at either side of it.

Opposite the bus shelter I was waiting in, there is the junction with Walker Avenue - this was blocked off by the queue of cars.

The bus I was waiting for took 10 minutes to get from the top of Milford Road to the bus shelter.

My solution would be to divert the traffic going towards town so that it goes down Rupert Street temporarily, with the top of Rishton Lane being one-way southwards, from the Settle Street junction. I realise this would upset the people living on Rupert Street, but is surely a safer option than the dangerous and chaotic mess we have now.
