THE 12,000 drivers who travel in Preston every day could face paying congestion charges to enter the city.

Councillors may copy the jam-busting idea which makes motorists pay £5 when they use roads in central London.

A report by city officials suggests public transport and park and ride schemes are having little effect on Preston's streets.

Councillor Alan Valentine says 12,000 vehicles visit Preston every day - causing congestion and pollution.

He will urge officers to compile a report on a possible congestion charging scheme for Preston.
