THE small stalk with two arrows printed on it, located on your steering column, is for indicating and letting other road users know what your intended direction is.

It doesn't cost anything, and will not break from over use.

The principles are really quite simple. If you are turning left, indicate left in good time, and vice versa for right turns.

On the approach to a roundabout, if you are going left, indicate left on the approach. For straight across, don't indicate until you pass the exit before the one you want, then indicate left. For a right turn, indicate right on the approach, then, when you pass the penultimate exit, indicate left. Simple.

If motorists followed these easy procedures, it would result in an overall smoother and safer drive for all.

I am a fed-up truck driver who keeps having to stop when people turn left in front of me without indicating. I then have the fun of doing up to 10 gear changes to get going again.
