MY request to a highways officer to consider two suggestions to install a couple of safety features in the roads at Plank Lane and at Lee Bank, Westhoughton, brought me a fascinating response.
Both spots are potential death traps. The junction at Platt Lane and Park Road is narrow, and one side is obscured by the corner building. Cars are frequently parked in a position which causes swerving at the junction, which is often busy at peak times as traffic cannot really turn right into Park Road.
In Lee Bank there are blind junctions between the new extension of the road and the ancient lane to the site of Lee Hall -- used by walkers, children, bikers, dog exercisers. All are susceptible to the new traffic going fast to the new houses.
Apparently, policy on safety promotions depends on whether there have been accidents at a site. I can appreciate the wish to avoid repeat accidents, but I would have thought that a policy to prevent a first one occurring would be just as desirable!
Do all our councillors support this policy, or do they not know about it?
