Wanderers found the going tough at The Hawthorns where one of the favourites for relegation from the Premiership claimed their first victory of the season.
Home manager Gary Megson, continually under-fire this week and threatened with the sack according to the media, said: "It was a fantastic result for us."
Euro 2004 hero Stelios gave Wanderers a lifeline with a 72nd minute free kick which sneaked into the West Brom net at The Hawthorns.
But earlier, Jay-Jay Okocha's best mate Kanu had put West Brom in the lead in the Sky TV pay-for-view game on Saturday teatime and was later awarded the Man of the Match champers.
Okocha, doubtful with a groin injury for much of the week, was taken off midway through the first-half and WBA scored again in the 64th minute through Gera.
Wanderers, hunting a Euro spot at the end of the season after impressive performances against Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal have come down to earth which will not surprise the management who are continually warning fans against making their expectations too high.
However, don't expect Big Sam's comments about the performance to be too complimentary!
