THE First World War was just beginning when a "temporary" wooden church in Lostock was built by combining two Sunday schools.

To celebrate its 90th anniversary, church supporters of the parish of St Thomas and St John have planned a series of events to mark the occasion and to aid Bolton Urban Outreach and church funds.

These include a Flower Festival on the weekend of Friday and Saturday, October 8 to10, and a musical celebration on the Friday, when pupils from Lostock County Primary School will join the church choir and other musicians in a varied programme.

There is also a barn dance on the Saturday evening and a Songs of Praise on the Sunday evening, followed by an auction of flowers.

On Sunday next at the church's Harvest Festival, there will be a chain of people holding hands -- to symbolise how the little wooden church has reached out in the community for decades, and its hopes for the same in the future.

Tickets for the barn dance are available on 01204-64509 and for Songs of Praise on 01204-652977.
