WITH reference to the council's purchase of the three waste recycling lorries, Cllr Heyes has made a genuine attempt to explain that the decision was taken by the previous Labour administration. But he could have enlightened readers more.
In reality, it is council managers who mostly decide what does or does not happen in Bolton and this could just as easily have happened under the LibDems.
I am awaiting an announcement from the LibDems in a few months time that council tax will rise by the usual inflation, plus several per cent.
Cllr Heyes' ruling group has yet to publish a list of policies. Root and branch reform of town hall spending is badly needed and if not addressed, the public's 'love affair' with the LibDems will be over.
There is no good reason why the environment and commercial services departments should not be merged, streamlining management duplication and directing savings to front-line services.
If the LibDems fail to introduce efficiency and accountability, they may end up losing control if any council ward by-election is held and Labour, or Conservative win the seat.
I suggest that what happens to the livelihoods of the Market Hall small traders will be a turning point for the LibDems reputation and credibility.
Mr S Pearce
