FIREFIGHTERS rescued a pony from a canal in Wharf Fold Road, Whitefield, at 6.30am on Friday.
Firefighters from Whitefield and Eccles joined the horse's owners, a vet and RSPCA in trying to rescue the animal.
The Water Rescue Unit from Eccles arrived with a boat and two firefighters went into the water.
The pony suffered cuts to its hind legs and exhaustion.
