A 77-year-old grandmother who was seriously injured after being dragged down her garden steps by a thief has been touched by the kindness of hospital staff.
On hearing about her ordeal, porters at the Royal Bolton Hospital had a whip-round for her and raised £70.
Edna Brown, of Heaton, suffered a broken arm and severe bruising in the attack two weeks ago.
She was putting the key in her front door following a shopping trip when a man snatched her handbag from her shoulder.
He grabbed her with such force that she was pulled to the ground.
The thief escaped with her groceries and a small amount of money, leaving the terrified pensioner lying in agony.
The porters were touched by her plight and had a collection to raise cash for her.
They presented the money to the plucky pensioner and wished her well.
Mrs Brown, who is recuperating at home, said: "I cried when they came to see me. It was brilliant, I couldn't believe it.
"It just shows there are nice people out there.
"I am still in a lot of pain. My arm isn't healing properly and I have been back to the hospital.
"Doctors say they will look at it again in a week or so and I may need to have an operation.
"My family are looking after me and making sure I am keeping my feet up."
Police are still hunting the thief, who is described as white, in his mid-20s, 5ft 10ins, of slim build, with a gaunt face, and with prominent cheekbones and shaven hair.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Robbery Unit at Bolton on 0161 856 5652.
