DETECTIVES are hunting two armed raiders who escaped with cash from a Post Office in Leigh.

Two masked men burst into the Plank Lane Post Office on Firs Lane on Monday, just before 11am.

The pair forced their way behind the shop counter and one man held a gun to a shop assistant's head while demanding that the other shop assistant opened the door to a store room.

While the two assistants were forced to stay in the store room, the two raiders searched behind the counter before running off with a quantity of cash. The men escaped in a Gold Volvo C70, driven by another man, which was waiting on Thompson Street.

The car, reported stolen from the Hindley area last Sunday, was later found abandoned on Fell Street.

One of the offenders was wearing dark blue jeans, a dark blue top with white stripes and a grey hooded top underneath. The second offender was wearing dark blue clothing and a nylon jacket with a hood. The driver of the Volvo V70 is white, in his late forties, with a shaved head and possibly wearing silver framed glasses.

Det Con Paolo Dale, of Leigh CID, said: "We are particularly interested in speaking to anyone who may have seen the gold Volvo car until when it was abandoned on Fell Street.

"Anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the area at the time of the incident should contact Leigh CID on 0161 856 7254 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
