A POPULAR community centre has undergone an extensive £40,000 refurbishment project to make it accessible to everyone.

Tatton Community Centre has now satisfied new regulations under the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) which came into force on October 1.

The legislation states that organisations must make all reasonable efforts to make all public buildings accessible to everyone in the community, including people in wheelchairs.

Councillor Cath Hoyle, Chorley Borough Council's executive member for life and leisure, oversees the running and maintenance of the town's community centres as part of her portfolio.

She said: "I'm delighted with the work carried out at Tatton to ensure it is a facility which is accessible to everyone in the area.

"This community centre is very important. It is one of the best loved and best used facilities in the borough and a hub of life in the area.

"The facilities there and the community spirit it helps to create is excellent and I'm so pleased we have been able to upgrade the building so everyone can enjoy it."

Work required to bring the building up to standard under the new act was carried out over five weeks and include a total refurbishment of the toilet facilities and replacing doors to provide easier access.

The centre, stands in grounds which include a children's play area, skate park and picnic spots, a community classroom which offers access to computer equipment and the internet as well as many different courses.

Other groups that run in the centre, and would welcome newcomers, include an OFSTED registered nursery, after-school club, toddler group, karate classes, samba and youth silver band.
