CHRIS Flanagan traces the recent moves of some of Wanderers' Premiership stars, from Bobic to Ballesta via a former European Golden Boot winner from Brazil

WANDERERS have become one of the Premiership's most cosmopolitan clubs in the last three years, attracting players from around the world.

And many of the stars who have turned out for the Whites since they returned to the top flight in 2001 have continued their travels after leaving the Reebok.

There are many former Wanderers players now dotted around the globe -- with some enjoying better fortunes than others.

Striker Mario Jardel is struggling to make an impact as he attempts to resurrect his career back in South America after an unhappy year at Wanderers.

Jardel, a former European Golden Boot winner, ended last season in his native Brazil, attempting to fix up a loan move to Palmeiras, having gone missing during a temporary move to Serie A side Ancona in March.

The 31-year-old Brazilian joined Argentinian side Newell's Old Boys in August. But despite being given his opportunity in the starting line-up in the first game of the season, he then lost his place. He has since made only two substitute appearances, and has yet to score for his new club.

His fortunes contrast with another striker who did not quite fit the bill at the Reebok, Javi Moreno, who has scored four goals in seven games since joining Real Zaragoza in the summer.

After failing to impress in trials with Nottingham Forest and Charlton Athletic, Ibrahim Ba has signed a deal with Turkish club Caykur Rizespor, but is yet to feature due to a lack of fitness.

Defender Steve Howey has moved to America after failing to find a club in England following Wanderers' decision to release him in May.

Howey has joined MLS side New England Revolution, under the management of former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol and Bolton-born former Ipswich and Arsenal striker Paul Mariner.

Former Reebok loan star Bernard Mendy was dropped from the French squad for the recent games with the Republic of Ireland and Cyprus, after making his full international debut in FIFA's centenary celebration match against Brazil in May.

The 23-year-old has suffered a recent loss of form at his club side PSG, with whom he has featured at right wing back in this season's Champions League, after winning the French Cup last year.

Striker Fredi Bobic -- who played a key role in Wanderers' relegation escape of 2002 -- is still a regular with Bundesliga outfit Hertha Berlin.

But he has struggled to recapture the goalscoring form which saw him score 14 goals for Hannover two seasons ago to regain his place in the German squad.

At Hannover, he played alongside Kostas Konstantinidis, who had a short loan spell at the Reebok at the end of Wanderers' first season in the Premiership.

The Greek defender moved on to German second division club FC Koln in the summer.

Salva Ballesta, who was on loan to Wanderers from Valencia for the second half of the 2002/2003 season, has just made another temporary move.

Ballesta has joined Atletico Madrid on loan from Valencia, after scoring 18 goals last season in a similar temporary arrangement with Malaga.

Stig Tofting returned to Denmark earlier this year to join Aarhus, after spending a few months in China with Taijin Taida.

Tofting followed the lead of Michael Johansen, who played for AB Copenhagen for three years after leaving Bolton on a Bosman free transfer, before joining lower-division side Greve this summer.

However, Bo Hansen, who left Wanderers to sign for FC Midtjylland, has been forced to retire with a knee injury.

Elsewhere, Akin Bulent has settled back in Turkey, joining Malatyaspor via Genclerbirligi; Pierre-Yves Andre is now with Bastia after previous club Guingamp were relegated from France's top flight last season; and Akinori Nishizawa is still in Japan with J-League team Cerezo Osaka, where he returned after an unsuccessful loan period with Bolton.
