UNIVERSITY students Simon French and Ahmed Adam put down their books for a week to help out a charity for the homeless.
They were among four students from the University of Bolton who helped transform four rooms at a former Army barracks for charity Emmaus into a community centre where homeless people will live and work. The first four people are due to move in at the end of March and the charity hopes to have 14 residents by the end of the year.
The building has 21 one-bedroomed units, a shop, workshops and a cafe.
Emmaus had been looking for a site in Bolton for seven years before landing the former Territorial Army barracks on Fletcher Street 18 months ago in a deal with the Ministry of Defence.
Emmaus Business Manager Chris Mayer said: "We have achieved what we set out to do at this stage and it's looking very positive." Emmaus is a worldwide charity, whose UK President is former Beirut hostage Terry Waite.
