10 years ago from the Evening News March 8, 1995: Two 14-year-old girls were arrested by police last night after bricks were hurled on to passing cars from a Farnworth motorway bridge.

One driver suffered a broken nose when a brick smashed through the windscreen of his car as he drove along the M61.

At least five other cars and vans were damaged when they were pelted with bricks as they passed under the Worsley Road bridge.

A £1.8 million sports and exhibition centre at Bolton College will finally go ahead.

Bolton Council leisure chiefs announced today that a financial wrangle has now been sorted out and the green light has been given for work to begin.

The news ends a nail-biting two-year wait for the scheme, which will replace Silverwell Street as Bolton's major town centre sports venue.

ACTRESS Diana Dors was the guest speaker at the fifth Charter Anniversary dinner of the Bolton-Le-Moors Round Table held at the Pack Horse Hotel, Bolton.

AN escaped eagle owl has been captured after several weeks of freedom in the Bolton area.

The aviary keeper at Moss Bank Park, Bolton, Mr Joe Gradwell, and his assistant Anne Williams, spotted the owl in a tree and enticed it to the ground so that it could be caught in a sack. The two-foot owl, which is thought to have been stolen from a zoo, has eaten its way through five hens, two ducks, numerous sparrows and at least one magpie during its spell in Bolton.

WHILST the number of people in Bolton mills working less than a full week tends to increase, it is interesting to note that other firms are increasing their demands for labour on the Bolton Employment Exchange.

Mr C. H. Barrett, manager of the Exchange, said today that more than 500 workers were on short time and in all 18 firms were concerned.

About 400 of the workers were from15 spinning firms, the three weaving sheds accounting for the remainder.

The 2,158-mile RAC rally of 1955 started today on Blackpool promenade.

The prospect of almost four days and nights of non-stop driving did not take the cheerful grin from the face of Bolton competitor Fred Snaylam, secretary of the Bolton-le-Moors Car Club.

He is driving his cream Triumph TR2 with Tommy Warburton as navigator.

March 8, 1905

THE christening ceremony and test of the new steam fire engine, constructed for the Bolton Corporation by Messrs Shand, Mason and Co, took place in the presence of a large crowd on Victoria Square on Tuesday afternoon.

Ald Brown expressed his pleasure in performing the ceremony of christening, because he had taken a prominent part in recommending the engine's purchase.

He christened the engine "Alexandra" after their Queen and, as they named their last engine after their late beloved Queen Victoria, they could not find a better name.
