Bolton 7 Lytham 10
Bolton took the opportunity of a friendly to field a less experienced side.
Simon Brown was back at prop for Bolton, after a lengthy absence due to work commitments and his bullocking runs gave Bolton a dimension that has been missing in recent weeks. Lytham, however, were the only side to score in the first half, when after several phases they broke through to score an unconverted try.
Bolton showed plenty of enterprise and ran most penalties and attacked with the ball in hand. The visitors' defence was put to the test time and time again, but it held out.
The game suddenly burst into life with 10 minutes left, as Bolton ran a succession of penalties in the Lytham 22, and wing forward Paul Sutcliffe scored. Stuart Paul showed great confidence as he calmly struck the conversion that should have won the game for Bolton.
Lytham had other ideas and pushed Bolton back from the kick off. From the following line-out they caught and drove a very well organised try out wide. In the final seconds Bolton were awarded a penalty in front of the posts and made the brave decision to run the ball, but failed to score.
Eagle 1st 12 Bolton 2nd 32
Bolton did well against Warrington side Eagle, one of the top sides in the league.
They did not waste any time in scoring and ran in two tries within the first 10 minutes, the first scored by flanker Andy Swain and the second by lock forward Peter Hackin. Both tries were the result of some powerful forward play from Nick Griffiths and Chris Turner.
Stand off Tom Keech slotted over one of the conversions and a penalty kick from distance in difficult conditions for a 15-0 lead after just 12 minutes. Hackin ran in his second try from long range which was converted by Keech before half time.
Full back Mike Singleton benefited from one of Kyle Green's powerful surges up field and slipped a long pass to Gaffey to score. The forwards were not to be outdone and after some nifty footwork combined with powerful running, Swain added his second of the day. Warrington hit back and grabbed two tries.
Bolton 3rd 36 Bury 3rd 0
Bolton thrashed their dearest neighbours Bury with a comprehensive win. An experienced line up gave Bolton the edge in every department with the tries coming from; Phil Caswell, Derek Keogh, Graham Stanley, Paul Hunt and Dave O
Byrne with Danny Barlow adding the extra points. The win lifts Bolton into mid table and pushes their rivals into the drop zone.
Broughton 19 Bolton 4th 5
Bolton reversed their fixture with Broughton and travelled to Salford to play on the better surface. A try by Alex Metcalfe kept Bolton in touch as the home side went 12-5 in front at the break. Bolton then looked to have scored as they attacked the blind side from a scrum, the referee was however unsighted. In the latter stages freshly introduced legs in the Broughton side pushed Bolton back and they conceded a further try to lose an enjoyable run out.
