A TRIO of Bolton girls are getting in shape for a charity jungle trek that will lead them up Borneo's highest mountain.

Ruth Allan, Rebecca Gainard and Hayley Cunningham are joining Bolton Wanderers legend, Paul Jones, to raise money for the Children Today charity.

The former skipper is taking part in the Professional Footballers' Association-backed adventure in June to raise money for disabled children.

He will lead a seven-strong team in a series of tough challenges including a 72km cycle along jungle paths, climbing South East Asia's highest peak, raft racing, white water rafting and abseiling.

Ruth and Rebecca, of Tonge Moor Road, and Hayley, of Tonge Fold Road, who work in the accounts department at Axa Insurance in Bradshawgate, are looking forward to a night time trek up Mount Kinabalu.

Ruth, aged 23, said: "I'm really excited, it's going to be quite a challenge. We are going to be walking all the way to the top. I've been going to the gym a lot to get fit for it." She said she had also been borrowing her boyfriend's bike and cycling up Rivington Pike to hone her fitness levels.

At 13,455ft, Kinabalu is the highest mountain in Borneo. Lacking foothills, it appears to shoot straight up into the sky, its jagged granite peaks floating above the clouds.

The team will be waking up at 2am to climb by torchlight to the top so that they can watch the sunrise from its peak.

They will also learn jungle survival skills, eat off the land and sleep under the stars in order to raise thousands of pounds to buy items like special wheelchairs for children with disabilities.

To go on the expedition, each team member must raise at least £3,500 and all the money raised by Paul Jones' team will go towards helping children in the Bolton area.

Paul is the captain of one of five teams in the Soccer Legends Challenge.

The four other captains who are taking a team to Borneo are: Brian Kilcline (ex-Newcastle United), Alan Kennedy (ex-Liverpool), Arthur Albiston (ex-Manchester United), and Neville Southall (ex-Everton).

Children Today wants to hear from companies, groups and individuals who would like to back the efforts of the captains - Paul in particular - by joining the trek.
