PLANS to give biggest research grants to elite universities like Cambridge have been criticised by unions.
The Higher Education Funding Council for England (Hefce), said it was giving research-based universities more money than those that focused on teaching.
Cambridge will receive £92.4m for research in the 2005-6 academic year, compared with £1.4m for the University of Central Lancashire.
