RADCLIFFE BORO 2, PRESCOT CABLES 1: IT will never be known if the teacups were flying in the Radcliffe Boro dressing room at half-time, but whatever measures Kevin Glendon took to galvanise his team certainly had the desired effect.
A woeful first half display was soon forgotten after the break as Boro applied constant pressure to the Cables' goal and were eventually rewarded with Simon Kelly's last gasp winner.
With new signing Pete Carty unavailable it was again a threadbare side that set out to capitalise on Saturday's win at Lincoln, but it was Cables who dominated the opening 45 minutes.
The pitch was dry, and the exaggerated bounce of the ball, together with Prescot's all-action, quick tackling style, totally unsettled Boro.
Darren Royle, on his return to Stainton Park, had an early header just wide, but it was Cables who showed greater movement, passng the ball around smartly.
They took the lead after 14 minutes when a left-wing cross found Jason Massey unmarked and a crisp volley gave Danny Hurst no chance.
Hurst then punched a corner straight to Adam Flynn, whose clever lob just cleared the bar, and on 20 minutes Massey hit the Boro woodwork.
Ciaran Kilheeney briefly threatened for Boro, but Massey again had the ball in the net for the visitors but was ruled narrowly offside.
Boro could not get a grip of the game as Cables never allowed them time to play and Karl Connolly lobbed over when put clear.
A neat Boro build-up involving Scott Wilson, Richard Battersby and Steve Foster then saw Kilheeney turn the ball over the bar.
Prescot almost doubled their lead just before the break when Hurst was forced to turn Masseey's angled drive over.
However, it was a much different Boro side that emerged for the second half.
Suddenly they were first to the ball and it was Cables who were forced on to the back foot.
Battersby had a 25-yard effort blocked and Wilson's shot just passed the post after a neat, three-man move.
Martyn Forrest and Wilson both had effiorts blocked, as Cables were forced into some desperate defending, and on 56 minutes Battersby hit goalkeeper Ryan McMahon when put through.
But Boro did draw level with a fine goal on 62 minutes.
Battersby's cross-field pass found substitute Rob Massey, whose precise cross picked out Kilheeney. His clever chest control and clinical low finish did the rest.
Foster couldn't control another Massey cross and he then blazed over the bar witrh another effort.
After dominating the first half Prescot were now rarely seen as an attacking force and Boro went all out for the winner.
Foster hooked the ball just over the bar and did have it in the back of the net on 80 minutes, only to be denied by the the linesman's flag.
In a frantic finish Wilson had a dipping 20 yard shot turned over by McMahon and substitute Leon Grandison had a goal-bound effort headed clear.
In the third minute of injury time Boro finally claimed the three points their second half performance deserved.
Grandison was cynically fouled and Forrest floated the free kick into the heart of a crowded Cables' box.
When they needed a breakthough Boro finally got one, as the ball fell nicely for skipper Kelly who rifled home from 12 yards.
BORO: Hurst, Sampson, Spencer, Kelly, Royle, McGuire, Wilson, Battersby, Kilheeney, Foster, Forrest. Subs: Massey (for Sampson, 23), Grandison (for Spencer, 87), Johnston.
