VISITORS enjoyed a musical extravaganza at the first night of ensembles organised by Bolton music Service.

More than 1,000 young people will be taking part in the week-long event to promote Bolton's musical groups.

Sunday night got the event off to a rousing start with Bolton Training Brass Band performing a selection of songs for an audience of more than 300 people at the Albert Halls, followed by Ladz A Capella, Bolton Youth Wind Ensemble and Bolton Training Percussion Ensemble, where children as young as four displayed their talents.

Jane Hampson, head of Bolton Music Service, said: "They were just so cute. They nearly stole the show."

The solo guest student spot went to 18-year-old percussionist Daniel Baxendale, of Thornleigh High School, who impressed with his version of Kazee.

He was followed by Bolton Youth Choir and Bolton Youth Brass Ensemble. The performance was rounded off by Bolton Youth Orchestra.

On Monday night, audiences at the venue from 7pm will be treated to a range of musical styles from Bolton Intermediate Brass Band, Westhoughton Training Choir, Bolton Junior Training Strings and Bolton Junior Percussion Ensemble in the first half of the show.

Withins Community Drumming and Vocal Band, Bolton Youth String Quartet, Bolton Youth Concert Band and the BUMP musicians will finish the evening, with a mixture of styles from classical to jazz and songs from hit musicals.
